After the narrow defeat earlier in the day at the hands of UK Asians the next opponents for the Spanish Academy were Sandacre CC.
The Derbyshire Premier League outfit are the current ECB National Club Cricket champions and part of their prize for winning the competition was a place in the Lady Taverners tournament.
The English side won the toss and elected to bat. The energy levels of the young Academy side was evident from the first ball as they put in their most impressive fielding performance to date.
Only three of the Sandacre batsmen got into double figures as the Academy bowled out the Midlanders for just 82. Young Adam Algar took two fantastic catches on the boundary and Yasir Ali bagged four wickets in an impressive spell of bowling.
However, it was the skipper Tanveer Iqbal who led from the front, taking four key wickets of the Sandacre top order at the cost of just 14 runs.
The Academy experimented with their batting order, promoting newcomer Tausef Ahmed up the order to join regular opener Armaghan Khan. The experiment worked to a degree as the pair put on 26 before Tausef was well caught by Goodall off the bowling of McFaydean for 9.
Munoz-Mills was run out in a mix up with Khan, but after that minor hiccoup it was plain sailing for the Academy as they came out victorious by eight wickets and with over half their overs still to be bowled.
Another excellent performance from all the team as day one closed with the Academy still in the hunt for the final and a game against the Taverners Legends that would include Andy Caddick, Hamish Marshall and Sam Billings amongst others.
