The Austrian Cricket Federation, Cricket Espana and Cataluyna Cricket combined to help the United Nations stage a game of cricket near Tarragona, Cataluyna last weekend as part of the 42cd Inter Agency Games.
A few months ago Muhammad Ashfaq, Chairman of the Austrian Cricket Federation contacted Cricket Espana to introduce them to Wajira Ranasinghe. Mr Ranasinghe was in charge of the cricket event for the Games in Salou and he wanted to know if Spain could assist in the organisational side of things.
Cricket Espana got in touch with the Vice President of Cricket in Cataluyna, Mr Robert Masih, who was more than happy to assist with the project by providing a wicket, stumps and independent officials for the tournament.
Last weekend the event took place with three teams playing a super six triangular tournament at the Municipal Sports Centre in Tarragona. UNMISS (United Nations Mission in South Sudan), Geneva, and Afghanistan for Peace were the teams involved with players from Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka among the countries represented.
UNMISS and Afghanistan for Peace were the two teams who contested the final with UNMISS finishing the winners of the tournament. Thirteen different sports took place during the games with some 1500 people from 127 different countries.
The objective of these games was to bring together active and retired members of more than 50 international UN agencies, and to strenghten international ties through sports and other recreational activities, thus enhancing mutual understanding amongst the different cultures.
Tarragona has also been chosen to host the 2017 XVIII Mediterranean Games that will take place over 10 days from 30th June to 9th July with over 24 countries expected to have participants.
