BELGIUM 186 FOR 8 BEAT SPAIN 106 ALL OUT BY 80 RUNS

Spain played their second game of the Division 2 Under 17 tournament today in Bochum, Germany. Their opponents were Belgium, one of the favourites for the competition and they were coming into the game off consecutive victories over Gibraltar and Greece.

Spain won the toss and elected to field on a slightly overcast day.First up for Spain were the bowlers Sunderland and Girling who did such a good job in the first game against Greece. Although both bowlers bowled well it was a excellent piece of fielding by Matt Smith at mid on that gave Spain their first wicket. His pick up and direct hit from a strong shot by S Mehta saw the opener well short of his ground with the score on 16.

Belgium then established a 38 run partnership between Farmaloe and Weighill before the latter holed out to Gurling at mid off from Sivier’s bowling with the score on 54. A quickfire innings by Ed Still (22) and an even quicker innings by Sanghivi (33 off 28 balls) that included 3 huge sixes put the Belgium side in a strong position when the score was on 158 for 4 off 36 overs before Girling took 3 quick wickets in two consecutive overs to stem the aggressive batting of Belgium. A flurry of runs at the end with Sharma scoring 21 off 11 balls gave the Belgiums a formidable score of 186 for 8.

Spain’s reply started disastrously when Brook was run out for 1 and the other opener Taylor was caught by Sharma off Shukla for 2 to leave Spain reeling at 15 for 2. Steady play by Sivier and Garside consolidated the Spanish innings and they were just begining to up the tempo when Garside got out to a simple catch at point off the bowling of spinnr Farmaloe.

Sivier batted stoically for 27 as the middle order came and went quickly but when he was the 7th man out for 93 Spains hopes off victory appeared to have evapourated. A further 13 runs were added for the last few wickets and the fact that the top score in Spain’s innings was extras for 39 suggests that the Iberians will have to improve in this area in their 2 final games between Switzerland and Gibraltar.

One plus for Spain on an otherwise unhappy day was that Ben Girling was made Man of the match by the Israeli and Malta umpires.

Tomorrow there are no games as it is a specified rest day with Spain’s next game being against Switzerland on Wednesday at the army base in Munchengladbach.
