NORTHERN LEAGUE UPDATE
In recent weeks there have been three scheduled matches in the Northern league. At Alfas the Sporting first eleven took on a second string Alfas and won easily. Batting first, openers Spencer and Ali scored briskly and added a century partnership before both fell to Packiam in their mid fifties. Compton then added to the misery of Alfas II by scoring a classy 103 not out as the firsts posted a total of 309 for 4. In reply Alfas II were quickly losing wickets and only resistance from MacInnes stopped the teams final score being under 3 figures. Alfas II were finally skittled out for 109 and victory went to Alfas I by 200 runs. Unfortunately both teams were deducted 2 points for only fielding 10 players each so the final point count for the day was Sporting Alfas 18 points Sporting Alfas II 1 point.
To add to Alfas II’s misery they were unable to field a team in their next game against Barcelona so in accordance with league rules Alfas II were deducted 10 points and Barcelona were awarded 17 points.
The match between Barcelona and Valencia was a much more interesting affair.Barcelona batting first scored 284 for 7 to secure maximum batting points. In response, Valencia batted valiently but just fell short by 36 runs as they were all out for 248.Barcelona received the maximum 20 points and Valencia obtained 7.
