Madrid United became the first winners of the inuagural Madrid Twenty/Twenty event by claiming the points required in the last match of the competition to overturn Madrid CC and finish top of the four team tournament.
Over the duration of March and April Madrid United, Sonseca, Madrid CC and Alcorcon have played each other twice and the competition came to a head last weekend when Madrid United obtained the two necessary victories over Sonseca to acquire the points to squeeze out Madrid CC as first time winners.
In the first game United scored a creditable 184 off their twenty overs to get maximum batting points and then bowled Soneca out comfortably for a sub-par score to win the match with ease and get the full allocation of points on offer as well.
The return fixture in the afternoon was a much closer affair. Sonseca batted first and scored a respectable 159 all out, so crucially Madrid United got their full quota of bowling points from this game too.
In reply, United lost two early wickets and were in trouble at the start, but opener Waheed Aktar remained calm and continued to nudge the score towards the required total. He found an able batting partner in Abid Butt and together they chased down the total with a handful of balls to spare.
Collecting an additional four bonus points put Madrid United five points clear of their nearest rivals Madrid CC to claim the title of Twenty/Twenty champions for the Madrid region.
Alcorcon can count themselves a little unlucky because their double header fixture against Sonseca was washed out giving them little chance to make up ground after a poor start in the competition.
