BRAVE INTELLECTUALS DEMOLISHED BY MADRID UNITED

30th June 2010

MADRID UNITED SET LEAGUE RECORD

On the day Madrid United set a league record by scoring over 500 runs in 40 overs, it is the Intellectuals who can look back on the day with a sense of achievement, having put out a full side that included two players that had never seen a cricket ball before.

In return for their comitment they received 3 bonus points, and embodied a spirit that bodes well for all that enjoy cricket in Spain. Below is a synopsis of the game and a message from Lawrence McGarry of the Intellectuals.

Madrid United CC         527 for 7 declared
Intellectuals CC                40 all out
Madrid United CC won by buckets of runs

(Intellectuals’ man of the match: Elliot Dawes – for getting two wickets and being the only batsman to reach double figures).

A big thanks goes to all the team – young and old, male and female, able and wounded – who ventured all the way to La Manga and ensured that the club fielded eleven players. It might have been a heavy defeat but instead of a €200 fine and 10 point penalty we came away with 3 bonus points (thanks to the cunning bowling of Messrs Keeling and Dawes).

Special thanks also go to rookie members José and Seba; recruited at short notice and never having seen a cricket bat or ball before in their lives, they braved the field and faced the fierce artillery of the opposition with true commitment and all their body and soul and arms and legs and – in Seba’s case – eyes.
