Three teams converged on the Woodbridge Oval to take part in a Triangular Junior Torneo specifically aimed at 11 year olds and younger.

The event, the brainchild of the Junior Director of Spanish cricket Neil Brook, aims to get youngsters involved in cricket at the earliest possible age, and for them to experience competitive matches for the first time on a full size wicket, with a hard ball and within a league format.

The rules are simple, 7 a side, 7 overs per team, two runs for a wide and no balls, and batsmen retire at 20 (but they are allowed to return at the end of an innings if there are no more wickets left). No wides or no balls are re-bowled except in the last over and at least six different players must ball one over each. The bowler who has two overs must ball the last over and one other. Bonus points are available for numerous landmarks, including run totals, bowling maiden overs and taking two wickets in one over.

The competition is geared primarily towards 11 year olds and under but overage players are allowed to play at the discretion of the Director of Junior Cricket and the team coaches. The three teams playing in the inaugural event were Sporting Alfas Junior Academy, La Manga and San Fulgencio.

The first game was played between La Manga and Alfas. La Manga scored 57 for 3 off their 7 overs with James Wilson Prestel scoring 14 not out. The Alfas bowling provided La Manga with 36 extras but Jack Perman bowled an excellent over, finishing with figures of 2 for 5 and earning Alfas a bonus point for taking 2 wickets in one over.

In reply, Alfas batted valiantly but managed only 55 for 1 to lose the game by one run. Tyler Hogan Brown and Keiron Perman both finished in double figures but were unable to get Alfas over the finishing line.

Game two was a rematch with Alfas hungry to reverse the result from the previous encounter. Coaches Laundon and Cowley made several changes to the Alfas side whilst Coach Brook for La Manga kept an unchanged side.

Again another close game ensued, and the winners were in doubt until the very last ball with Alfas finally prevailing by just one run.

Alfas scored 48 for 2 with Tyler Hogan Brown again reaching double figures. The pressure of chasing down a total proved too much for the second match in succession and La Manga made just 47 for 3 with young Kyle Roper bowling an economical over of 1 wicket for 7 and the Intellectuals league star Elliot Dawes keeping his nerve at the death to bowl an excellent last over that claimed a wicket for just 8 runs.

Game 3 saw San Fulgencio introduced to the party and they had La Manga for opponents. San Fulgencio looked focused and determined after a journey to the ground that had seen their minibus overheat on the autovia.

The Fulgencio batmen scored freely to make an impressive 81, with Adam Algar retiring undefeated on 23 and Ashley the other opener scoring 17 before she was out trying to "up" the run rate even more.

La Manga´s reply was very spirited and they scored the second highest score of the day, 65 in trying to overcome the SFL total. James Prestel Wilson was again impressive for La Manga and Michael Carter was the pick of the Fulgencio bowlers, taking two wickets in one over to give SFL another bonus point.

Game 4 was to give SFL their only loss of the day at the hands of Alfas. San Fulgencio lost the toss and were put into bat by the Alfas captain Harry Marshall.

Again Adam Algar showed his batting prowess, retiring undefeated on 23 not out, and Ashley also showed her undoubted potential once more with another score in double figures. SFL fell off a bit at the end of their overs thanks to some fine Alfas bowling to finish with a total of 47 for 2.

In reply Harry Marshall showed maturity beyond his years and soon retired after passing the 20 run mark. The momentum given to Alfas from their openers enabled the hosts to scrape home with 1.4 overs to spare.

Game 5 SFL got back to winning ways with a victory over La Manga. La Manga batted first and again James Prestel Wilson proved unmoveable and retired early after passing 20 runs. His brother Michael Prestel Wilson also contributed a notable score to the La Manga total, as did TJ Tregust.

In reply, Adam Algar completed his third undefeated retired innings and all rounder Michael Carter scored an excellent 13. Again extras proved a thorn in the La Manga side, despite an excellent spell from James Prestel Wilson (2-16) and a first wicket in the tournament for Robbie Williams, who celebrated in a way Andre Nel would have been proud of.

The final game of the day saw SFL gain revenge for their earlier loss over Alfas. Alfas batted first and scored just 40 runs against the visitors.

With Adam Algar in such fine form with the bat it did not seem nearly enough and so it proved with SFL surpassing the Alfas score with two full overs to spare.

Many thanks to all who took part in a great day of cricket that saw over 98 overs of cricket played at the Woodbridge Oval. As well as the league games a friendly game of mixed teams took place between Spain´s Future and Little and Large. Again it was a game packed with incident, with Little and Large scoring a leg bye off the final ball to secure victory.

A special thanks go to the coaches and parents of all teams, to Alfas chairman, Kevin Laundon for making the pitch available, to Dennis Pennick for attending the cabin all day long, and to Neil Brook for organising and overseeing the whole event. Finally, a mention to all the players, who played every game in a spirit that many seniors could learn from.

It is hoped to repeat the event soon, and if possible make it a regular event on the Spanish cricket calendar.
