SPANISH JUNIORS RECEIVE MCC LEGACY GRANT

As a result of the MCC´s successful tour of Spain last year Spanish Junior cricket have received a legacy grant for 4 different projects throughout Spain on May 15th of this year.

The grant, provided by the MCC and ICC combined, can be used by countries who have hosted MCC tours on agreed projects or for the purchase of relevant equipment ,

The Marylebone Cricket Club came to Spain last year and played two matches at La Manga against the Spanish National side and one game against the Spanish league champions of 2009 and 2010, Cataluyna CC, at the Woodbridge Oval in Alfas Del Pi.

The Cricket Espana directorate put forward a couple of application options for the grant and news came through recently from the ICC that the Junior proposal had been accepted for the available 3,750 US Dollar grant.

Neil Brook, the director of Junior Cricket put forward a plan for a development day on May 15th across the different regions of Spian. It will be based along the lines of the annual Junior Festial that CE have held annually for the last few years, and boys and girls, from four different hotbeds of Spanish cricket will benefit from this legacy.

Here is a blueprint of the activities that are scheduled to take place..

Event 1 - MADRID - A day devoted to coaching & teaching players at all levels but specifically for the juniors. Between 20 to 30 children are expected to take part. Manny Fernandez, the coach co-ordinator for Spain and members of Madrid CC will host the event.

Event 2 - LANZAROTE - Schools /Junior Tournament that will be organised by Jack Talbot, the chairman of the Lanzarote Cricket Association. Up to 30 Juniors are expected to attend the torneo on the Gran Canaria island.

Event 3 - BARCELONA - Junior Tournament, with some coaching, involving some 50 to 60 juniors. This event will be overseen by the President of the Cataluyna Cricket Association, Robert Masih, and Spanish international, Armaghan Khan who coached the Spanish Under 17 squad in the ICC Europe event in the Isle of Man last year.

Event 4 - LA MANGA - La Manga Club Cricket Festival involving 150 to 200 children. Pupils from schools and clubs in the surrounding area will be transported to La Manga Resort for the day and Cricket España coaches will set up drill stations on batting, bowling and fielding techniques. A mixed boys-girls tournament will round off the day in the afternoon.

La Manga Resort have agreed to publicise the event and Cricket Travel Ltd have kindly donated Newberry Sports equipment, including numerous mini bats and caps, to all 4 regions.
