SPAIN V JERSEY (ICC WORLD TWENTY20 EUROPE REGION QUALIFIER B)

30th August 2018

Jersey 93 for 0 beat Spain 92 for 8 by 10 wickets.

After the first day loss to Italy, Spain had arguably the toughest challenge of the whole tournament up next with a contest against Jersey.

One of the favourites in the event the Channel Islanders had lots of cricketers in their squad with International tournament experience, including Jonty Jenner, who is currently on the books of Sussex CCC.

Winning the toss Spain elected to bat first. They made one change from the previous day with Muhammad Asjed coming in for Tom Vine, the intention being to strengthen the batting line up. Asjed opened with Awais Ahmed and the pair struggled to produce runs in the power play.

That set the tone for the whole of the Spanish innings, as they struggled to find the boundary, especially against the Jersey spinners. Yasir Ali top scored with 21 but four stumpings and two run outs tell the story of how the Spanish batsmen were unable to pierce the field on a regular basis.

The whole innings only yielded four x fours, and two x sixes as the Spaniards finished their twenty overs on 92 for 8.

It was a tough ask for the bowling outfit and it got harder when the first over went for ten runs. The Jersey openers of Ward and Jenner continued in the same vein for the rest of the innings and surpassed the Spanish total in the 15th over without any complications.

Spain now have a rest day to regroup before playing two crucial matches on the 1st September. That morning they play the Isle of Man and then in the afternoon they have a contest against Finland. Spain finish their Group games with a game against Belgium.
