Sporting Alfas welcomed Alicante Star back to the Woodbridge Oval in a match the hosts needed to win to keep the pressure on the chasing pack in the race for the league title, the visitors hoping to show a better performance than last time they came.
Things started as the last match, Alicante Star going in to bat first and Abdul and K. Perman started things off.
Khawar was first to fall in the 3rd over, slashing hard and sending one high into the sun to deep gully, Ahmad ran in to take the catch, looked like he had overrun it but ended up taking it well, much to the surprise and delight of his teamates!
Sokha was in and out in a flash of his blade, missing the straight one from a very fired up Perman and middle stump vanished! Perman also managed to dismiss the other opener in his opening spell, Miana finding M. Perman for the 1st of his 4 catches on the day!
Husnain set about trying to rebuild, first with Miana before he fell and then with Qamar. Both batsmen getting valuble lives as, both off the bowling of Hamza edged through to the 'keeper and both were to slight to have been given.
Husnain fell though with the introduction of Ahmed who tempted the batsman with a slower ball which he could only hit staight up, skipper Perman having plenty of time to worry about the catch before taking it safely.
Dangerman Naveed was in next but never got the chance to get going, after a few teasing deliveries from the brilliant returning Hamza, he tempted Naveed into driving at one badly and Perman took another catch, diving low to his side and taking it in the opposite hand that he meant to!
Another returning hero to the Alfas team, Tyler Brown was brought on and dispatched for 6 with his first ball, much to the amusement of the crowd and the bowler himself but he ended up with 2/10 as his radar came back and he clean bowled Ihsan and Fingers Tocher continued his catching streak with another beauty.
Last man in did not get much of a chance as with the skipper on to try something different, chances were coming, one such steepling shot landed just a yard shy of the fielder..... But Perman had his wicket soon after, Shani not getting hold of one and offering a simple return catch to the bowler and Alicante all out for 99.
The Umpires ruled there were 13 overs to go before the scheduled Tea Break and it was all Alfas needed to chase down the target. Neither opener being dismissed and Abdul reaching his 50 with the last shot of the match, a beautiful 4 through the covers to wrap up the victory.
20 points to Alfas to extend their lead at the top, although having played a lot more than their competitors, a trip to La Manga next week will be a tough test but one that is being looked forward to by all involved for sure.
