CRICKET ESPANA ACADEMY V TOM MAYNARD TRUST - GAME ONE

22nd February 2017

La Manga was the venue once again for the annual contest between a Cricket Spain XI and the Tom Maynard Trust.

The game comes at the end of the annual training camp for the TMT players who spend their first few days at Desert Springs working on strengthening and conditioning techniques with the likes of former internationals, Ian Harvey, Matt Maynard and Jamie Dalrymple.

The first game on a crisp day at the Murcia venue saw the visitors win the toss and elect to bat first. Spain had an early breakthrough when Josh Bohannen of Lancashire was caught in the first over by the Spanish skipper Christian Munoz Mills off the bowling of Ravi Panchal.

Harry Dearden, who made his first class county debut for Leicestershire in 2016 and Graham Clark of Durham shared a quickfire 40 run partnership for the second wicket but the standout innings for the TMT Academy was by Connor Brown of Glamorgan who smashed 63 from just 37 balls in an effort that included ten fours and 1 six.

The home side did well to maintain the TMT score to 188 for 6 as at the half way stage the tourists had 104 on the scoreboard with only four wickets back in the pavillion.

For the hosts the pick of the bowler was Yasir Ali. The Cataluynan based player ended with figures of three for 24 from his four over allocation.

In reply the Spanish Academy started badly losing opener Muhamad Asjad without a run on the board. Awais Ahmed and Yasir Ali consolidated well and took the score to 56 before Ali was caught off the bowling of Lewis Gregory of Somerset for 20. Awais Ahmed went on to make 46 but found very little support except for Adam Algar of Sporting Alfas who scored 22 not out.

The Spanish Academy ended on 132 for 8, giving the TMT Academy a 56 run victory. The home side will have another chance to pit their wits against the young professionals this afternoon in another T-20 contest.
