TORREVIEJA WIN ECCL DIVISION TWO LEAGUE

23rd September 2014

There was euphoria for Torrevieja and disappointment for both the Intellectuals and La Manga as the visitors to Bonalba got the two results they needed to win the ECCL Division Two title.

Before the games started on Sunday all three teams could win the League but for Torrevieja to do so they needed to beat Intellectuals and then hope that La Manga II did not overcome Madrid II.

The visitors batted first on the tricky Bonalba pitch and posted 99 with Lee Blann scoring over half the total with a well grafted 51. The only other player to score double figures was L Singh with 11 as all the other batsmen failed to come to terms with the uneven bounce of the pitch. The last five Torrevieja wickets fell for just three runs with Waqar Waris finishing with figures of 5-38 for the home side.

High scores are infrequent at the Alicante based ground so Torrevieja entered the second part of the game in confident mood. The opener bowlers Happy and Hasam were soon among the wickets but it was skipper Lee Brown who did the majority of the damage, knocking off the tail end of the Intellectuals innings with three wickets for just four runs.

The home side finished all out on 81 to give the visitors an 18 run victory and a chance of the title. Down the road at La Manga, Madrid II were playing La Manga II and a victory for the Murcia based side would take the title away from Torrevieja.

However, Madrid proved they are as dangerous as any side in the league on their day, and won the match to ensure that Torrevieja were crowned Champions of ECCL Division Two for the first time in their history.
